New Year’s Eve Possum Drop Approved

With First Night Missoula, I believe we will all have plenty of fun things on our plate for New Year's Eve. And it's nice to know the good people of Brasstown, North Carolina will get to ring in the new year with their festive......possum drop. You know how Times Square in New York drops their glitter ball to a countdown, right? Well, Associated Press tells that the plan to have a possum captured and put in a cage to be lowered at midnight was opposed by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). They argued in court (yes, this went to court) that lights, noise and crowd could wreck a possum's nerves and health. But a judge ruled in favor of the possum droppers and the Wildlife Resources Commission has issued a permit to allow the folks of Brasstown (would they be called Brassies?) to drop their possum! DB
