Not just one - but two new bigger culverts are being installed on the Skalkaho Rye Creek Road #75 on the Bitterroot National Forest southeast of Hamilton. Tod McKay of the Bitterroot Forest said the work is beginning this week on the road at mile posts 5.8 and 6.0 with the road closed during the work. Weather permitting, the work should take about four weeks.

Heavy equipment moved in and will be replacing two two smaller culverts that were not adequate for high water in the Skalkaho Creek tributaries, with the potential for damaging the road. The new water throughways will include "stream simulation" to improve the passage of fish and other aquatic organisms, said McKay in a news release. Related road improvements are also scheduled. Signs are posted to alert drivers and the work is being done on the Stevensville Ranger District. The information number for the project information is (406) 777-5461.
