Opening weekend 2017 is behind us but how successful were some Montana hunters?

We spoke with FWP Spokeswoman Vivaca Crowser about the success this year for South Central and Western Montana. With the highest number of animals through their check stations since 2010 she had a good report.

"I think people were finding a few more deer and elk both in places where we haven't seen them in awhile and really seemed to amount to some good harvest totals at the stations" said Vivaca.

Their three regular hunter check stations are in Bonner, Darby and one in Anaconda had good numbers. " The total numbers reported 117 Elk, 111 Whitetail Deer 15 Mule Deer and 5 Black Bears"

I am gathering as I am learning that Mule Deer are a lot more difficult to harvest.Plenty of time though if you did not harvest something this weekend. This is a really great sign of a good chance of a harvest at some point this season. November 26th is the close of rifle season. Good luck!
