It appears Montana has a new channel catfish state record. Don Davenport (pictured) was fishing in Snow Creek Bay on Fort Peck Reservoir this past weekend and landed a monster. Don was using a 1/8 ounce jig with 8 pound test line fishing for walleye when he hooked into what turned out to be a 41-inch, 34 pound, 8 ounce channel cat. Owners of Hell Creek Marina verified the numbers and also noted it measured 13 inches between its eyes! Lordy! Once confirmed by Montanan Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the fish will break the old state record by over three pounds and three inches, which in fish terms is crushing it! Congratulations, Don. Wonder how many people so far have asked him exactly what he was using for bait on that jig. DB
