47 year-old Ronda Knox was charged on Monday afternoon in Missoula justice court with attempted theft, after trying to cash a $7,500 check on Friday, March 8 at EZ Money Check Cashing Services.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Shaun Donovan said that police were called to the check cashing business when Knox attempted to cash the large check. When the author of the check was notified in Virginia, she claimed the money was to redeem a large sweepstakes prize. Knox told authorities the same story, that she was also using the money to claim a prize.

Knox was charged with felony attempted theft, and if found guilty could face up to 10 years in the Montana State Prison, and up to a $50,000 fine.

Donovan said Judge John Odlin released Knox on her own recognizance.
