Missoula police are investigating an assault that occurred over the weekend against a woman who was jogging through a local park.

Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said the assault occurred at about 7:20 p.m. on Saturday.

"A female jogger was struck by a rock and then physically assaulted by a male in a local park in the 1000 block of Monroe Street," Welsh said. "The victim was jogging on the trail in the park when she felt something hard strike her on the back of the head and it caused her to stumble and fall down. Immediately after, a male jumped on top of her and pinned her down. She was kicking and screaming at the male who then got up and ran off northbound on the trail."

Welsh said officers searched the park but were unable to locate the suspect. The victim received an injury to the back of her head and she was taken to the hospital by friends where she was treated and released.

"The suspect is described as a male approximately 18 to 20 years of age with short blond hair and was clean shaven," he said. "She described him as having a small to average build and said he was wearing a short-sleeved red athletic shirt with white stitching."

Welsh said the suspect is still at large, and anyone who may know of his whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Mitch Lang at the Missoula Police Department at 552-6300.
