Missoula Police Officer Involved In Fatal Shooting Back On Patrol [YouTube]

The Missoula Police Officer involved in a New Year's Eve fatal shooting has been returned to his normal duties pending a coroner's inquest.

Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said Corporal Paul Kelly returned to duty last Friday.

"This was the result of the completion of the sheriff's office investigation, as well as the Missoula Police Department's internal investigation," Welsh said. "Chief Brady reviewed both of those along with the County Attorney's Office and they reviewed all the applicable elements from the police department policy. After meeting with Corporal Kelly, a decision was made that he was ready to return to duty."

Officer Kelly shot Kalieb Williams, 20, once in the head with his service revolver inside a vehicle, when Williams refused repeated commands to stop strangling his hostage.

Welsh said there will be a coroner's inquest on March 9, as well as a deadly force review board convened.

The Williams family disputes the allegation that the suspect was strangling his hostage prior to the fatal shooting, and they reportedly have plans to sue the city over the man's death.
