Missoula police received a report at about 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday regarding a possible scam involving the payment of a power bill perpetrated against a local business.

Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said the business owner was instructed over the phone to provide money, or face having his power shut off.

“A business owner here in town received a phone call from an individual who asked him to call a local power company,” Welsh said. “The business owner did not recognize the prefix of the phone number. The individual then claimed that they would be shutting off power to the man’s business AT 134 West Front Street one hour later at 7 p.m. if the business owner did not wire the money.”

Welsh said the business owner then ignored the man, and called the power company’s real number in Missoula.

“The business owner then called the local power company who apparently felt that this was a scam attempt,” Welsh said. “This person then called 9-1-1 and reported the incident to police.”

Welsh urges anyone who receives a similar call threatening power disruption to contact the Missoula Police Department at 552-6300.
