A Missoula man, Demian Whiteshirt, 38, appeared in Missoula Justice Court on Tuesday, accused of threatening to kill his girlfriend with a utility knife.

Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said Whiteshirt was arrested Monday night at a residence on Livingston Avenue.

"It was reported that Whiteshirt threatened his girlfriend with a razor knife or a utility knife," Welsh said. "He threatened to kill her by slashing up a comforter."

According to court documents, Whiteshirt's girlfriend was shaking uncontrollably when officers arrived. She said that when she told him she had called police, he said he had his story straight and asked what hers would be. Records indicate that Whiteshirt told police that he didn't have the knife on him and that he would 'see them in court'.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Matt Jennings asked Judge Karen Orzech for a substantial bail.

"The State recommends $50,000 bail," Jennings said. "The facts of the case are somewhat troubling with the physical and verbal assaults and threats to the victim. We feel that the high bail amount is appropriate here."

Judge Orzech set bail for Whiteshirt at $25,000.
