Shivani Vora wrote an article for the New York Times about how you can cut down on that holiday travel stress and even a tip to save money and time.

Fly on the actual holiday: You may not think traveling on a holiday is a good idea but the lack of crowds can go a long way. Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve is usually less stressful than traveling the day before.
Fly direct if you can: Not only is this less stressful cause it saves you time and you don't have to transfer in airports but less chance of your luggage getting lost!

Mail gifts in advance: You do not want to travel with that blanket and electronics you bought your relatives for Christmas so ship them early and save the hassle.

If you can, travel in January instead: If you are a college kid this is easy but if not extending and taking some extra time into January can help with the congestion of the airports
