The body of a man in his 60's was found Wednesday evening in the Clark Fork River.

Spokesman Jim Klowitter with the Missoula Police Department said the man's body was discovered at about 6:30 p.m. by the California Street Footbridge.

"Police responded to a report of a body in the river," Klowitter said. "They discovered an individual tentatively identified as a 60 year-old Missoula resident. We're currently awaiting a report from the coroner as to the cause and manner of death."

Captain Brad Giffin with the Missoula County Sheriff's Office said the man's identity is known to authorities, but the name will not be made public until his family can be notified. Giffin said a news release about the man's identity will probably be forthcoming sometime Friday morning.

In June, Melvin Beedle drove his vehicle into the Clark Fork River near the same spot where the unidentified man's body was found. Beedle, 71, drowned and his death was ruled an accident.
