A half foot or so of fluffy white snow fell over the Mid-Atlantic overnight Tuesday, but the storm left far more dangerous conditions behind in the South.

Ice has wreaked havoc in parts of North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Georgia and South Carolina. Freezing rain has downed power lines and caused as many as 200,000 people to lose electricity, and many roads are impassable. North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia have declared states of emergency, requiring all non-essential workers to stay home.

Nashville has been dealing with one of the worst storms in ten years. Leaving a lot of work and music undone. The National Weather Service warned that the bitter cold temperatures would remain deep into the week.

Arctic air is sweeping in behind the storm, meaning that many areas with ice and snow on roads should not expect a quick thaw. (USA Today).
