This could be the time to head out into the woods if you’re a hunter. Hunter trips and elk and white-tailed deer totaled through hunter check stations in Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) Region 2 are up from last year at this point, and the percentage of hunters with game was higher this week than last. White tail and mule harvest numbers have started coming up in the Seeley/Swan area with several trophy mule deer bucks coming from up there. Elk harvest is still down 25% from last year.

Down at the Darby check station things are different for elk. Almost 5000 hunters have been through and elk numbers are up 24%, 231 animals have been taken. Mule and white tail deer numbers are up as well.

Over by Anaconda things are slow with just over 1000 hunters and low elk and deer numbers.

There’s just over two weeks left in the regular big game season with a closing date of December 1 at sunset. Don’t forget to get your guess in the Dead Elk Contest you could win a $500 gift card from Sportsman’s Warehouse and KYSS FM.  (Thanks to Vivica Crowser of FW&P for the latest hunting information.)
