27 year-old Shawn Kaestner appeared in Missoula Justice Court on Tuesday via video from the Missoula County Jail, charged with felony assault with a weapon.

According to court documents, Kaestner threatened to kill his former girlfriend outside a residence on West Alder, after which her new boyfriend stepped in between the two to protect the woman. Kaestner allegedly pulled a knife and struggled with the other man, stabbing him in the hand.

Court records go on to state that the female told responding police officers that she was in fear for her life, while the stabbing victim told police he was afraid for both their lives.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Patty Bower asked Justice of the Peace Amy Blixt for a high bail.

"Judge, I would ask that bail be set in the amount of $50,000," Bower said. "As you can see, this defendant is a danger to the community, and particularly to these victims. Alcohol was a significant factor, and based on the allegations, $50,000 is more than reasonable and appropriate in this case."

Judge Blixt agreed, setting bail for Kaestner at $50,000. He was remanded back to the Missoula County Jail.
