It was a blowout the first year, very tight in the second year and again pretty lopsided in 2015-2016.

Your Montana Grizzlies have out-brawled the MSU Bobcats again.

The Brawl of the Wild series was established in August 2013 to highlight the head-to-head rivalry matchups between the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats across their 13 common sports. Three years in, and it’s been mostly a one-sided battle.

Aided by a strong showing in the winter and spring sports, Montana won the Brawl of the Wild for the third straight year in 2015-16, outpointing Montana State 12-5 to improve to 3-0 in the series.

After the Grizzlies and Bobcats traded points in volleyball and cross country last fall to leave the series tied 2-2, a 54-35 victory in Bozeman on the football field in November, worth two points in the series standings, gave Montana a lead it would hold the rest of the school year.

The Grizzlies claimed three of four available points on the basketball court, took three of four during the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field championships, and swept the head-to-head meetings in men’s and women’s tennis.

Montana won the inaugural series by a score of 14-3 in 2013-14 and sneaked out a 9-8 victory last year, the clinching point coming in the Grizzlies’ one-stroke victory over the Bobcats at the Big Sky Conference women’s golf championship.

Montana has yet to drop a point to Montana State in the three-year history of the series in the sports of football, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis.

The first point of the 2016-17 Brawl of the Wild series will be up for grabs when the Montana volleyball team plays at Bozeman on Saturday, Oct. 1. Our thanks to UM Sports Information Director Joel Carlson for the good news!   DB
