Our congratulations going out to Montana Grizzly sophomore quarterback Makena Simis. On Monday, Simis was named the Big Sky Conference co-offensive player of the week, sharing  the honor with Eastern Washington receiver phenom Cooper Kupp.

Simis had a record-breaking performance in his first career start for Montana. The third-string sophomore quarterback tied a school record with six touchdown passes for 321 yards on 15-of-22 passes. Simis’ breakout performance led the Grizzlies to a key 42-16 win over North Dakota.

Kupp finished with school records of 20 catches and 275 yards, and also scored three touchdowns.

Simis is in pretty good company with those 6 TD passes in one game. The only other Griz quarterbacks to do that are Dave Dickenson, Brian Ah Yat and Jordan Johnson. With injuries still slowing Montana's number one and two quarterbacks, we hope it's a sign of good things to come for as long as he's the guy!

Griz take on Portland State Saturday. Scott Gurnsey and I will be on the air with the Statewide Tailgate Show at 1:00 p.m. Kickoff at 3:00. We hope you'll join us on the Voice of the Griz, KGVO! Our thanks to the Big Sky Conference for contributing to this story.
