When I was growing up my grandparents lived in another state. We only saw them a few times a year and every time we saw them we would beg my grandmother to make her famous biscuits. Everyone loved her biscuits.

Half of what made them so great was that every time she made them she would choose one of us kids to help her. I always loved making them with her, it is one of my fondest memories that I have of my grandma.

These biscuits are pretty easy to make, and exceptionally tasty with honey or jam.

Grandma Barrie’s Baking Powder Biscuits

3 1/2 cups flour

5 teaspoons baking powder

1 heaping tablespoon sugar

1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar

2/3 cup Crisco

1 1/2 cup milk

Throw flour, baking powder, sugar and cream of tartar into a bowl and stir a few times. Cut the Crisco into the flour mixture with a pastry cutter or two forks until the mix looks like course crumbs.

Pour the milk into the mix and stir with a fork, just until the mixture becomes dough. Be sure not to over stir the dough or it will make the biscuits tough and they will not rise like they should.

Spray a 9x9 inch pan with cooking spray. Scrape the dough into the pan. Lightly flour your hands and then gently spread the dough evenly into the pan. Use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into biscuits. I like large biscuits, so I cut it into 12, but you can make as many or as few cuts as you like to make the number of biscuits or size you desire.

Bake at 450 degrees for 12 to 12 minutes.
