Glacier Sees Above Normal Snow Levels

When there is more snow than park officials  has seen in many years, I begin to wonder where does global warming come into the equation? Don't get me wrong, I know the glaciers are receding but wow, look at all the snow!

Crews plowing roads in Glacier National Park say they are encountering substantial amounts of snow — in some cases between 20 percent and 40 percent more than normal levels.

Last week, surveyors with the USGS recorded 100 inches of snow at Siyeh Bend, two miles east of Logan Pass, and 140 inches of snow nearby at 7,500 feet of elevation. Road crews are finding snow drifts up to 8 feet to 10 feet deep in some parts of the park, instead of the normal 3-foot depths.

Park officials say the earliest possible opening of the famed Sun Road in its entirety will be June 17 because of rehabilitation work. But Glacier Superintendent Chas Cartwright says that until then, there will be plenty of spring activities in the park, including hiking and biking.
