Just after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Missoula Rural Fire was called out to a fight a wildland fire in the 11,000 block of Grant Creek Road, after a slash burn got away from a local homeowner.

Battalion Chief Greg Orr told KGVO News that when firefighters arrived, the blaze was already well established.

"By the time we arrived, the fire was climbing up a pretty steep hill," Orr said. "There was some heavy brush, but we had a pretty quick jump on it with some help from city fire and ultimately the Forest Service. With the quick help of the guys, we were able to get ahead of it and pinch it off before it got too far up into the trees."

Orr offers his advice to anyone planning to use a burn permit.

"The permits were available starting March 1st, they're easy to get, just hop online to our website or come down to the station and get one, they're only five bucks," Orr said. "Make sure you have plenty of people there to help you look after the fire, always have plenty of water available and the hand tools necessary to put out the fire. But most important, watch the weather, and never burn when it's windy."

Orr said homeowners should never hesitate to call 9-1-1 immediately if a fire gets out of control.

No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged by the fire.
