As part of Fire Prevention Week from October 9 through 15, sponsored by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, Keep Montana Green is sponsoring their annual Wildfire Prevention Art Contest.

Crystal Beckman, Fire Prevention and Education Coordinator with the Montana DNRC said 2016 is the 56 th year of the art contest for students of all ages.

"The due date for your poster is February 24th, so you have plenty of time to start thinking of those great ideas for the art contest," Beckman said. "We have cash prizes for all different divisions. There's a computer generated art division, an audio-visual division, and anyone from kindergarten through high school can participate."

Beckman said Fire Prevention Week is also the best time to check all smoke detectors in the home or business.

"The message this year is to make sure the smoke alarm is under 10 years old, and if they are more than 10 years old, you need to replace them, and the date is on the back," she said. "If you don't know how to check your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department. In Missoula, it's the Missoula City Fire department, but outside the city limits it's the Missoula Rural Fire Department, and they can tell you where the best places are to pick up your new smoke detector."
