Fire Crews Attack Frenchtown Grass Fire [YouTube]

Frenchtown Fire Department crews got some real-life training on attacking a wildland fire on Sunday afternoon.

Public Information Officer Mel Holtz said crews were training at Frenchtown High School when they received the call about a wildland fire burning nearby.

"There was a pretty significant column going up," Holtz said. "We were paged, along with the Forest Service and the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. Once we got up to the area out by the folf course up Roman Creek, we did find a grass fire of about an acre or an acre and a half. It did make an uphill run, and it is in steep terrain, and again, we've got crews trying to contain that, and to get a line around that."

Holtz said the cause of the fire is under investigation, since there has been no lightning in the area for quite some time.

"Our main focus is trying to get a line around this fire," he said. "People need to know that it's still pretty dry out here and this fire made a pretty significant run in a short amount of time."

Holtz said no property or structures had been damaged, and no injuries had been reported from the fire.
