Missoula police were notified early Thursday morning of a large hole in a fence on Prospect in the Grant Creek area, but due to the darkness, there was no sign of a person or a vehicle nearby.

Missoula Police Public Information Officer Travis Welsh told KGVO News that daylight revealed much more to the case.

"A single vehicle crashed through a fence and then went down a steep embankment that at the time of the original call, which was very early in the morning, officers weren't able to locate it," Welsh said. "they encountered no one up there, no one calling for help, and no indication that there was a vehicle or anyone there."

Just after daylight, Welsh said a jogger was able to see a vehicle from the roadway.

"A jogger from a local motel who was out running on Grant Creek Road was able to see this vehicle from the roadway, and called 9-1-1," he said. "Officers responded and did find a vehicle and a lone male driver who was apparently uninjured, but appeared to be intoxicated. He was subsequently arrested and charged with DUI."

The suspect was identified as 62 year-old Stephen Punke. According to the Missoula County Jail roster, Punke was released just after noon on Thursday after posting bail for his first DUI offense.
