My mother has been telling me to substitute applesauce for oil in my recipes for the past couple years now. I haven’t tried cooking with applesauce yet, but I have tasted a few things my mother has made with it. It is surprising that you can’t taste the applesauce at all, but it does manage to make whatever you bake with it nice and moist.

When I ran across this cake recipe, well I just had to give it a try. It was everything you would ever want in a chocolate cake and you don’t even know there’s applesauce in it. The chocolate chips and walnuts on top of the cake make it absolutely perfect.

Chocolate Cake with Applesauce

1 box chocolate cake mix

2 eggs

1/2 cup butter

2 cups applesauce

1 cup chocolate chips

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Whisk the butter and eggs together in a mixer until creamy. Add half of the cake mix and stir until combined then add 1 cup of applesauce and stir until combined. Repeat.

Pour the batter into a greased 9x13 inch cake pan. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top and then sprinkle the walnuts over the chocolate chips. Bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
