What's out there in the Bitterroot right now? Bob Danley, in our June 7th Bitterroot Outdoor Journal, has seen lots of butterflies enjoying the hot weather and over 23 species can be found in some areas. Bob said the Green Comma butterfly is named for the comma-shaped white mark on its underwing and can be found in the valley forests. Another good place for butterflies is in the area of Skalkaho Falls. Another small aerial species, Dragonflies, are just now emerging from their water-based phase into the air. When they take to flight, the mosquitoes get nervous. Go get 'em, dragonflies!

Bob also presented the often confusing way we describe bird calls. Bob's research has found some detailed ways to describe the unique calls, but he admits that human language fails in some areas to accurately represent the various calls. Some field guides don't agree on how to show pitch and tone of the animals. He also said the way we describe colors of the flowers have changed through the years and vary by language. For instance, the color Pink was wasn't part of the English language until the 1500s. You can hear the Bitterroot Outdoor Journal Thursday mornings about 7:45 a.m. on KLYQ 1240 AM radio in Hamilton and online at klyq.com and on our KLYQ phone App, which also provides the latest Ravalli County stories we've written.
