Firefighters are currently on the scene of three new lightning caused wildfires burning in the Bitterroot National Forest. All of the fires were discovered this afternoon and were likely started by lightning from last night’s dry thunderstorms. Two firefighters were flown in by helicopter to one of the more remote fires burning on the West Fork Ranger District northwest of Bare Cone Lookout near Watchtower trailhead. All of the fires are currently less than one acre in size.
After a 44 year-old Anaconda woman was drowned in the Blackfoot River on July 4th, authorities are reminding recreationists who are rafting or tubing on Western Montana rivers to use safety equipment and common sense. Vivaca Crowser is Public Education Coordinator for Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks. She says area rivers are still running high and fast, and the cold water can slow reaction times, especially during the hot days to come next week.
On Wednesday, the 4th of July, Missoula County Deputies responded with emergency workers to the Blackfoot River in the area of the Bonner Mill for a report of a 44 year-old Anaconda woman who had fallen into the river. She and her family were floating the river beginning at the Weigh Station Fishing Access. She became stuck on a log jam and after being freed by her 15 year old nephew she disappeared under water. She has been identified as Colleen Marie Nelson.
Two Missoula men in their 20′s were allegedly involved in an attempted break-in at a Frenchtown fireworks stand were late involved in a fatal one-vehicle rollover crash on I-90 just west of Missoula. Sergeant Tony Rio with the Missoula County Sheriff’s Department says the passenger in the suspect’s pickup truck was killed, while the driver was thrown from the vehicle.
On Sunday, June 24, 2012 at approximately 1:00 pm the pharmacy at Shopko was robbed and prescription medication was taken. Attached is a still photo from the surveillance video. Sometime this past weekend, 21 year-old Nicolas Anthony Rivera of Missoula found himself on the railroad tracks directly across from the Rock Creek Lodge when a passing Montana Rail Link train struck and killed him. Public Information Officer for the Missoula County Sheriff’s Department Jason Johnson says dental records were used to identify Rivera’s body.
A few minutes after 10 o’clock Sunday night, folks in the Seeley Lake area felt the earth move twice with a magnitude 3.7 earthquake, preceded just 25 seconds before by a smaller quake with a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter Scale. The quake was felt as far away as Ovando, Ronan and even Helena.
Missoula Police are investigating the armed robbery of the Shopko Pharmacy that occurred just after 1 pm Sunday. Sergeant Jerry Odlin says the suspect entered the store, went to the pharmacy counter and displayed a handgun as he demanded merchandise. Odlin says no one was injured during the robbery. The suspect is described as a 20 to 30 year-old white male with scruffy facial hair, wearing a red polo shirt with white stripes, blue jeans and a UM baseball cap. Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 721-44-44.

S. Senate, incumbent Democrat Jon Tester vs. Republican Congressman Denny Rehberg. For U. S. Representative, Republican Steve Daines vs Democrat Kim Gillen. For governor, Democrat Steve Bullock vs Republican Rick Hill. For Attorney General, Republican Tm Fox vs either Democrat Pam Bucy or Jesse Laslovich. The race was still too close to call as of 5 am Wednesday.
