An amateur geologist got his world rocked a bit while searching for unique stones. Salt Lake City rock hound Craig Alvord discovered a 6-foot-long World War II-era bomb!

He was in the Utah desert near the Nevada border. The bomb was near, but not in, an Air Force base's boundaries. You might assume that after all these decades that it was just a dud, right? Well, a Hill Air Force Base bomb squad came and detonated it with C4 plastic explosives. A spokesman says it appeared to be a World War II-era practice bomb. There is a practice area nearby which may explain its location.

So, did that scare the stones out of Mr. Alvord? Nah. He says it's the best find he's ever made in over 50 years of looking for rocks. He's probably back at it again this weekend!
