44 year-old Shawn McQuarrie is in the Missoula County Jail on $40,000 bond, charged with felony assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and misdemeanor unlawful restraint and tampering with a communication device.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Mark Handelman related the charges to Judge Landee Holloway.

"The defendant threatened the victim with a knife, a hammer and eventually hit her over the head with a broom," Handelman said. "He also strangled her, and wouldn't allow her to leave the apartment."

Handelman said McQuarrie's criminal history is extensive.

"He has two felonies from 2010, some 2014 parole violations, and California convictions which include felony burglary and several other misdemeanors. Standard conditions include drug testing, because it appears the defendant was under the influence during this incident."

McQuarrie's public defender told the judge his client was struggling with mental illness, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Judge Holloway set bail at $40,000 and remanded McQuarrie back to the jail after ordering him to have no further contact with the victim.
